House Speaker Promotes Bill Requiring Voter ID

The legislation seeks to ensure that ballots in federal elections are only cast by U.S. citizens.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson promoted election integrity legislation this week that would require voters to provide proof of citizenship in order to participate in federal elections. While it is already illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal elections, some immigrants have tried casting ballots, believing they have the right to vote.

Instead of potential voters simply filling out a form attesting to their citizenship, the bill would require proof of citizenship before registering to vote. Speaker Johnson said at a press conference that “a lot of illegals are voting in federal elections,” and that there is “no current mechanism to ensure only those registering or voting are actually citizens.”

Referencing allegations of voter fraud in the last presidential election, Speaker Johnson said, “Even if you weren’t concerned about the drop boxes and the ballot harvesting and the mail-in ballots in 2020, you definitely should be concerned that illegal aliens might be voting in 2024.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for Speaker Johnson and his colleagues in the House as they promote proof of citizenship for voter registration.
  • For members of Congress as they consider bills that seek to ensure election integrity.
