Interior Invests in Native Hawaiian Tourism Initiatives

2024 grant program opened for Indigenous educational engagement.

The Department of the Interior (DOI) opened $1 million in grant funding to Native Hawaiian Organizations offering educational programs to tourists. Applicants are encouraged to develop or enhance existing programs that offer an authentic experience of Hawai’i and Hawaiian culture, showing travelers traditional foods, ceremonies, buildings, and cultural activities. Awards for each program selected are estimated to average around $100,000 each.

“The Heritage Opportunities in Hawaiʻi Program seeks to encourage a tourism model that accurately showcases Native Hawaiian culture and traditions while providing protection and awareness for Hawaiʻi’s natural and cultural resources,” said Joan Mooney, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy, Management, and Budget.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For PDAS Mooney to be led by God as she oversees the facilitation of support for indigenous programs.
  • For discernment for Secretary Deb Haaland as she heads the Department of the Interior.
