Defense Innovation Unit awards contracts to three technology companies.
The Pentagon announced this month that contracts have been awarded to three companies for the development of undersea drones for military use. The Defense Innovation Unit chose Anduril Industries, Oceaneering International, and Kongsberg Discovery to develop prototypes, intending for unmanned underwater units to increase the number of U.S. vessels in the water while keeping sailors out of harm’s way.
“Crewed submarines are high-value, high-resource capital platforms necessary for crucial combat missions,” the Defense Innovation Unit stated. “Undersea warfare is critical to success in the Pacific and other contested environments. Providing needed autonomous underwater sensing and payload delivery in dispersed, long-range, deep, and contested environments is key.”
