Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? – Matthew 20:15

Today’s verse is part of a parable told by Jesus about a landowner who made a deal with laborers to be paid a certain amount of money for the hours worked. At the end of the day, the laborers who worked 8 hours were paid the same as the laborers who worked 1 hour due to the agreement they had made. As the owner handed out the pay, the workers who labored longer thought it unfair that they were paid the same amount. The money belonged to the landowner, it was his choice what to do with it. You can apply this parable as a call to be respectful and honor the agreements you make. Accept that God has given humans a measure of autonomy to make choices about how to allot their resources. Be content with what the Lord has generously provided. Pray today for those who govern this nation to honor their agreements and be honest in all their dealings.

As the Lord leads, pray with us…

  • For members of Congress as they determine government funding and federal spending.
  • For the president and members of his administration to be aware of and respond to the financial position and needs of the nation.
