In the News…

Legislation entitled the U.S. Data on U.S. Soil Act has been introduced in the House of Representatives by Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna of Florida. The bill would specifically prohibit social media platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram from storing any Americans’ data in a physical data center that is located in countries considered adversarial, such as China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, or Russia. It would also prevent officials from such countries from accessing such data.

Prior to introducing the legislation, Representative Luna stated, “Americans daily face the threat of exposing their personal data to bad-actor countries who are looking for a chance to exploit us, simply by opening our phones. The protections in my bill are long overdue. A military leader would never hand over his tactics and intelligence to the enemy on a silver platter, and neither should we.”

Representatives from Illinois, New York, and South Carolina have joined Representative Luna as co-sponsors of the legislation.
