From the Beginning

For kingship belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations.      Psalm 22:28

The heading above Psalm 22 in the Bible reads: “To the Choirmaster. According to the Doe of the Dawn. A Psalm of David.” The references in the psalm mirror the death of Jesus so closely that the Church believes David was moved by the Holy Spirit to write this psalm prophetically, to speak of the sufferings, rejection, and prophetic circumstances of Jesus’ death and deliverance. New Testament passages that record the actual events of Jesus’ death correspond with Psalm 22. (See Matthew 27:35, 46; Mark 15:34; and John 19:24.)

This psalm may have been sung to music that anticipated tragedy, for a deer hunted at dawn and may experience exhaustion, weakness, and ultimately death. The melody may have been one of mourning rather than an exhilarating song. And yet, there was deliverance, a precious rescue for which there was much rejoicing (Psalm 22:23, 25, 27).

While the plan was that Christ would suffer, His resurrection brought rejoicing. In fact, “all the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you. For the kingship belongs to the Lord” (verses 27-28). God exalted Him whose name is above every name and will cause every knee to bow and “every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord” (Philippians 2:9-11)!

From the beginning, God orchestrated the history of humankind and its Savior. As a believer, trust Him to be with you in all that you are experiencing. Have confidence that He will work all things for your good. Then pray for the United States, that Americans will come to serve the real King of the nations.

From you comes my praise in the great congregation;
    my vows I will perform before those who fear him.
26 The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied;
    those who seek him shall praise the Lord!
    May your hearts live forever!

27 All the ends of the earth shall remember
    and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
    shall worship before you.
28 For kingship belongs to the Lord,
    and he rules over the nations.

29 All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship;
    before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,
    even the one who could not keep himself alive.
30 Posterity shall serve him;
    it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation;
31 they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn,
    that he has done it.
