November 2nd – Thursday

The Lord of hosts has sworn, “As I have planned, so shall it be, and as I have purposed, so shall it stand.” – Isaiah 14:24

North Dakota and South Dakota were admitted to the Union on this day in 1889. The 39th and 40th states were numbered alphabetically for filing purposes, though President Benjamin Harrison shuffled the documents before signing so that no one knew which state was admitted first. As you consider the “sibling rivalry” of the Dakotas today, reflect on Jesus’ words regarding the first and the last (Matthew 19:30, 20:16). Do you desire to be first in your areas of influence? Are you willing to humbly serve the Lord without recognition? Are you content to store up your treasure in heaven where moth and rust do not corrupt (Matthew 6:19-20)? It can be a challenge in this world to trust your well-being to the Almighty One. The Savior promised in Matthew 6:33, “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.“ Trust in His faithfulness as you pray over the nation today.

As the Lord leads, pray with us…

  • For members of Congress as they consider the addition to the Union of other territories as states.
  • For U.S. public officials at every level of government to serve in their roles with humility.
