Speaker Continues to Negotiate Spending Bill Proposals

Some members of the House are undeterred at the possibility of a government shutdown.

Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy is working to pass a temporary funding bill before the deadline on September 30. He has been negotiating with members of his party who are willing to risk a government shutdown rather than compromise. There is a possibility that holdout legislators could call for McCarthy’s removal as speaker.

Speaker McCarthy expressed hope that two legislative proposals this week might move the House in a productive direction, one a version of a federal budget and the other a continuing resolution to extend the budget deadline.

“We’re going to be rational, responsible, and reasonable,“ stated Speaker McCarthy. “It’s not September 30 — the game is not over.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for Speaker McCarthy as he seeks to create consensus on the federal budget.
  • For the representatives in the House to work for the good of the nation and the benefit of Americans.
