Issue 609 – Verse of the Week

August 24th – August 30th, 2023

When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.   Matthew 9:36

Like Sheep

A recent article detailed how taxpayer money is funding a program that promotes atheism and humanism in the Middle East and North Africa. To illustrate the article, the news outlet showed posters displayed on a lush green lawn that said, “Theology is a myth-stake” and “Only sheep need a shepherd.” Although those posting the signs may have felt that humanists show they are equal to any supernatural or “divine” power, Jesus told the truth when He said humanity is like sheep… moreover, like sheep in need of a shepherd, someone to guide them, nurture them, provide for them and protect them. The Psalmist wrote, “Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us and we are his, we are his people and the sheep of his pasture” (Psalm 100:3). Jesus called Himself the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep” (John 10:11). “All we like sheep have gone astray,” Isaiah 53:6 says. But David reminds you that the Lord is your shepherd and in Him you have everything you need (Psalm 23). Be grateful today that you are a part of the sheepfold of God, and pray for those who deny that they need Him.
