The U.S. Patent Office issued its first patent to inventor Samuel Hopkins on this date in 1790. Hopkins had developed a new method to produce potash, a key ingredient in fertilizer. President George Washington personally signed the document. Article 1, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution gives the Federal Government the powers to “promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries.” The U.S. Patent Office issued its 10 millionth patent in 2018 for improvements to LADAR (laser detection and ranging) systems. As you reflect on the amazing scientific and technological advancements that have been made in this nation, ask that God would enable the Patent Office to continue to foster creativity and discovery for many years to come.
