Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and shrewd in their own sight! – Isaiah 5:21

The wisdom of humans is foolishness to God (1 Corinthians 3:19) and the foolishness of God is wiser than the wisdom of humanity (1 Corinthians 1:25) This is summed up in today’s verse, which is a caution against thinking you are wise without seeking God’s leading or input. Human wisdom can lead people into all types of ungodliness. The Lord provided His precepts and truths in Scripture to guide humankind in His ways. The Bible repeatedly states that wisdom comes from the Lord and that wisdom is founded upon reverence for and worship of Him. The arrogance that is present in being wise in one’s own eyes is completely at odds with Jesus’ example. He came to earth humbly, as a servant, even washing His disciples’ feet. As you meditate on the concepts of wisdom and the preeminence of God today, ask the Lord to show you how to love others and treat them as the Savior would.

As the Lord leads, pray with us…

  • That the Lord would soften the hearts of those in positions of authority who do not recognize Him as the Source of wisdom.
  • For believers in public office to seek God’s guidance continually as they serve.
