Issue 597 – Verse of the Week

VERSE OF THE WEEK

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.   John 1:5

Unextinguishable

The Amplified Bible states today’s verse this way: “The Light shines on in the darkness, and the darkness did not understand it or overpower it or appropriate it or absorb it [and is unreceptive to it].” That is an apt description of the culture in America today. There is a definite spiritual war going on, a war between the light and deep darkness. John 3:19-21 states, “And this is the judgment, the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.” Jesus frequently reminded His followers that they were to be lights in the darkness. Paul reminds you in Ephesians 4:11 to “take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.” Now is not the time to sit back and keep your light to yourself or let others cause you to hide it. “Let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light” (Romans 13:12). Be obedient to God’s call today, and let your light shine.
