Debt Ceiling Talks Reach Impasse

House negotiators report no progress as they leave a meeting with White House team.

Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy of California and his hand-picked debt ceiling negotiator,  Representative Garret Graves of Louisiana, walked out of a meeting with White House staff at the Capitol Friday, saying there was no point in continuing unless both sides showed seriousness about reaching an agreement.

President Biden is in Japan attending a summit of the G7. In his place, the White House issued a statement that said, “There are real differences between the parties on budget issues and talks will be difficult. The president’s team is working hard towards a reasonable bipartisan solution that can pass the House and Senate.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for Speaker McCarthy and his negotiating team as they seek a way to reduce spending.
  • For the president and his administration to be willing to work with Congress on the federal budget.
