Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another. – Proverbs 27:17

The first presidential veto of Congressional legislation occurred on this day in 1792. The bill had proposed what President George Washington determined to be an unconstitutional proposal for the apportionment of seats in the House of Representatives. Thomas Jefferson assisted President Washington in coming to the conclusion that the legislation would have allotted more representatives than the Constitution prescribed. Rather than endeavoring to overcome the president’s veto with a two-thirds majority, Congress drew up new legislation that apportioned representatives based on arithmetic. As members of Congress craft and prepare bills and resolutions in the present day, pray that they seek discernment from the Lord to pass laws that are in keeping with the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

As the Lord leads, pray with us…

  • For Speaker Kevin McCarthy to look to the Lord for guidance as he leads the House of Representatives.
  • For Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to seek God’s wisdom as he oversees proceedings in the upper chamber.
