An Objective Reality

That which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us.    1 John 1:3

There is a story of a man walking down the street of a foreign city at twilight. There are few people around, but another man is coming toward him from the opposite direction. As he nears, the first man recognizes the hymn that the man is whistling, and as that man passes, the first man begins whistling the same tune. Stopping in his tracks, the man from the foreign city turns, looks at the foreigner, and without a word the two men hug. Then each goes his own way.

The fellowship of believers is not a secret organization. Its members have an objective reality as the basis for their faith. It is faith based on historic events – the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. To know this Christ the Son of God is to have the assurance of eternal life (1 John 5:13). And this is a knowledge that binds hearts together.

John, the apostle, was most likely the writer of this short epistle. He emphasized from the beginning verses that he had seen, he had heard, he had touched the Christ who had revealed Himself openly to His disciples. “Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me” (John 14:11). To know the Son is to know the Father who sent Him.

While today’s culture has turned its back on the reality of Christ, be encouraged by other believers in the household of faith. Then pray for those who have not accepted salvation in Christ, especially leaders of this nation, that they may find the peace and unity that the reality of Christ affords. May they whistle the tune of faith.

Today’s Verse: 1 John 1:3

that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.

1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— 2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.
