Commerce Committee to Look Into Southwest Airlines

Multiple thousands of flights were canceled in just 2 days.

Chair of the Senate Commerce Committee, Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington, stated last week that they will be looking into the mass Southwest Airlines flight cancellations. Many airlines over Christmas weekend were impacted by freezing temperatures and winter weather that swept across the country. But Southwest canceled over 5,000 flights in 2 days, more than 60 percent of its entire schedule.

“The problems at Southwest Airlines over the last several days go beyond weather. The Committee will be looking into the causes of these disruptions and its impact to consumers,” said Senator Cantwell. “Consumers deserve strong protections, including an updated consumer refund rule.”

Southwest frontline employees and the pilots’ union have cited outdated infrastructure and software as the cause of the massive cancellations, indicating the airline has been working with decades-old technology.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Senator Cantwell and members of the committee as they investigate the airline for mass cancellations.
  • For wisdom for Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg as his department also looks into Southwest Airlines.
  • For the passengers and employees of Southwest who experienced so many disruptions over the holiday.
