Houses

Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary.   – Luke 2:4-5

How would you describe your “house” in light of the kind of people and history that defines it? Much is said in the Bible about “the house of David” and it is an important part of the lineage of Christ, legally giving Him the throne to rule and reign over Israel. David, while hoping to build God a house on Earth, was instead given the awesome gift of establishing the bloodline that would produce God’s Messiah, “Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever” (2 Samuel 7:16).

Lest you think the house of David was filled with finer folks than your house, the extent of the sinfulness of the kings sitting on the throne of David is hair-raising. However, God’s covenant promises have never depended upon human righteousness. They are always a description of His blessing alone. Some 1000 years after God made that promise to David, an angel appeared to a young woman proclaiming, “You will conceive in your womb and bear a son and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever” (Luke 1:31-33).

As you open your home to family and friends this holiday season, remember the baby born to Mary now sits upon God’s throne forever as Savior, just as was promised generations ago. Pray for many in the house of American government to invite Him into their hearts, home, and work.

3 Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, 2 who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house. 3 For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. 4 (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) 5 Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, 6 but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.
