Issue 570 – Verse of the Week

November 24th – November 30th, 2022

VERSE OF THE WEEK

Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!   Psalm 100:4

Come, Ye Thankful People, Come

In 1844, English hymn-writer Henry Alford wrote what has become known as the “harvest festival hymn,” still occasionally heard in some houses of worship at this time of year. Its first stanza celebrates a good harvest, raising praise to God for bringing it.  The next verse, which begins, “We ourselves are God’s own field,” relates Christ’s parable of the wheat and tares, while the last two stanzas relay thoughts of Christ’s second coming. It concludes, “Come, with all the angels, come,” beckoning the Lord not to delay His return. As you approach your Thanksgiving festivities, express your deep gratitude for salvation through Christ, for the Lord’s daily presence in your life, and for the knowledge that you will one day be with Him!
