Wisdom vs. Folly

We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ  – 2 Corinthians 10:5

If there was one person in the New Testament who was constantly “under fire,” it was the apostle Paul. He had been beaten, shipwrecked, and stoned… left for dead but kept alive by God so he could continue to proclaim the Gospel. At times when he preached, he was maligned by false teachers and questioned about his message and his motives. He was in a battle, for the Gospel he proclaimed conflicted with all forms of religion and philosophy known by humanity at the time.

This warfare could not be fought with weapons of this world, not with his hands nor with the accomplishments of his life. Because the conflict was between truth and error, the wisdom of God versus the wisdom of man, Paul encouraged the Corinthians (and you as well) to fight with the divine power given to the believer through the Word of God, the most effective weapon.

It is very evident in the world today that many people rely on their own wisdom and accomplishments to carry them through the difficulties of life. However, these are fleshly weapons that raise arguments and lofty opinions that challenge the knowledge of God (2 Corinthians 10:5). “Let no one deceive himself… the wisdom of this world is folly with God” (1 Corinthians 3:18-19).

Those who take refuge in Christ as Savior will yield their hearts and minds to the Holy Spirit. Faith leads you to surrender to the Spirit of the Lord and follow His divine guidance in standing for the truth against opposition. As the Lord gives you the strength you need to press on in His calling, pray that believers in leadership will stand strong in their commitment to Jesus.

I, Paul, myself entreat you, by the meekness and gentleness of Christ—I who am humble when face to face with you, but bold toward you when I am away!— 2 I beg of you that when I am present I may not have to show boldness with such confidence as I count on showing against some who suspect us of walking according to the flesh. 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, 6 being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete.
