President Expands Executive Order Regarding Nicaragua

Human rights violations lead to a new round of sanctions.

President Joe Biden signed an executive order this week that will impact the Nicaraguan gold industry. The order expands an executive order issued by President Trump that identified Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega as a threat to U.S. national security, adding to sanctions that were imposed against Nicaragua at the time of the original order. These two actions together make it very difficult for Americans to do business with the Nicaraguan gold industry.

“We can and will use every tool at our disposal to deny the Ortega-Murillo regime the resources they need to continue to undermine democratic institutions,” said Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson.
