Federal Agencies Enter Agreement on Tribal Sovereignty

Interior leads a dozen departments in a memorandum supporting Native Americans.

The Department of the Interior entered into a Memorandum of Agreement with 11 other federal departments this week, pledging collaboration and swift implementation of Tribal 477 Plans. This law provides Indigenous Tribes and Alaska Native entities the ability to streamline key processes through the Interior Department, including employment, training programs, funding, and various services.

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland reaffirmed the administration’s support of tribal sovereignty. “Today’s signing is an example of that commitment,” said the secretary. “I am grateful to the Tribal leaders who for years have made their voices heard on the need to improve implementation of Public Law 102-477 and whose efforts will create better jobs and economic opportunities for Indigenous peoples.”

The Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Education, Energy, Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, Housing and Urban Development, Justice, Labor, Transportation, and Veterans Affairs joined in signing the memorandum.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for the secretaries of the president’s Cabinet as they proceed with the support of tribal sovereignty.
  • For Secretary Haaland to look to the Lord for direction as she collaborates with tribal leaders.
