China Warns U.S. Regarding Taiwan

Presidents Biden and Xi have a lengthy phone conversation.

President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping had a phone conversation that lasted well over two hours on Thursday.  The White House reported, “On Taiwan, President Biden underscored that the United States policy has not changed and that the United States strongly opposes unilateral efforts to change the status quo or undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.”

Although the two leaders discussed “a range of issues,” the situation with Taiwan was a key point of the call. A lengthy response from China’s foreign ministry said that President Xi “elaborated on China’s principled position on the Taiwan question” and made clear China’s opposition to Taiwanese independence.

“The position of the Chinese government and people on the Taiwan question is consistent, and resolutely safeguarding China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity is the firm will of the more than 1.4 billion Chinese people. The public opinion cannot be defied. Those who play with fire will perish by it,” the Chinese readout said.  They reiterated that the U.S. “should honor the one-China principle.“

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For discernment for administration officials as policies regarding China and Taiwan are discussed and crafted.
  • For the president and secretary of state as they deliberate on the ways to handle Indo-Pacific relations.
  • For wisdom for Speaker Pelosi and other members of Congress as they address issues with China and Taiwan.
