Expansion of Student Loan Relief Programs Proposed

The education secretary announces inclusions for increased debt forgiveness.

This week, the Department of Education released a proposal to “expand and improve” student loan discharge programs under the Higher Education Act. The new regulation would extend relief to borrowers who are totally and permanently disabled as well as those whose institutions are closed or dealt deceptively with them. Also included in this proposed debt alleviation would be public service workers who qualify under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.

“We are committed to fixing a broken system. If a borrower qualifies for student loan relief, it shouldn’t take mountains of paperwork or a law degree to obtain it,” said Education Secretary Miguel Cardona. “Student loan benefits also should not be so hard to get that borrowers never actually benefit from them.“

He added, “These proposed regulations will protect borrowers and save them time, money, and frustration, and will hold their colleges responsible for wrongdoing.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Cardona as he oversees the expansion of relief from student loan debt.
  • For COO Richard Cordray to have discernment as he oversees the Office of Federal Student Aid.
  • That the president and his education advisors would seek God’s guidance regarding student loan forbearance.
