DOT Signs Self-Governance Program with Cherokee Nation

Decision-making agreement first of its kind.

On Tuesday in Oklahoma, U.S. Transportation Deputy Secretary Polly Trottenberg represented the department at the signing of the first-ever Tribal Transportation Self-Governance Program with the Cherokee Nation’s Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin, Jr. This transportation agreement has been in development since 2020 and will be the first of many between the federal government and sovereign indigenous nations.

“We’re proud to stand today with the Cherokee Nation to announce this first-of-its-kind Self-Governance Compact,” said Deputy Secretary Trottenberg. “It gives the Tribe much-deserved decision-making authority and flexibility over federal funds for transportation projects that can improve safety and create better connections across Cherokee Nation.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Deputy Secretary Trottenberg to seek God’s guidance as she fulfills her role in the department
  • For Transportation Department officials as they support Native Americans’ controlling their own infrastructure.
  • For the president’s administration as they authorize tribal nations to determine the use of federal funds.
