U.S. Wasted 82 Million Vaccine Doses

CVS and Walmart pharmacies responsible for more than 25 percent of waste.

Between December 2020 and mid-May 2022, slightly more than 82 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine distributed by the federal government have been thrown away. The figure represents roughly 11 percent of the total vaccine doses the government distributed.

CVS and Walmart, two pharmacy chains that worked to administer the COVID-19 vaccines, together were responsible for more than a quarter of the doses that were not used. Other pharmacies, including Rite Aid and  Costco, and dialysis centers each wasted more than a quarter of the doses they received.

The vaccines have a short shelf life, and they come in vials with multiple doses, Once a vial is opened, if it is not used quickly, it must be disposed of.
