First European Shipment of Baby Formula Arrives in U.S.

Secretary Vilsack greets first plane as it lands.

On Sunday, the first military cargo plane carrying an emergency shipment of baby formula from Europe landed in Indianapolis, Indiana. Parents with infants have been enduring the largest baby formula shortage in recent U.S. history, brought about at least in part by the closure of a major formula manufacturing plant in Sturgis, Michigan. Seventy-eight thousand pounds of specialty formula were unloaded from the plane, enough to fill 500,000 baby bottles.

“This is an important step, but it is by no means the only step that must take place. We will continue to work as the president has instructed us to look for every opportunity to increase supply,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, who greeted the plane on its arrival. “This particular formula is for a very, very small percentage of children. Roughly 17,000 children in the country basically are the beneficiaries of this particular formula,” he said.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the president and his administration to be discerning as they address the baby formula shortage.
  • For U.S. officials to properly vet formula that is brought in from other nations.
  • For the health of American infants as they endure the formula shortage.
