First seizure made by task force REPO.
On Monday, the U.S. Government seized a yacht worth $120 million owned by Russian billionaire Viktor Vekselberg. An ally of President Putin, Vekselberg has been heavily affected by U.S. sanctions. This is the first U.S. seizure executed by the task for REPO (Russian Elites, Proxies, and Oligarchs), which was created by Attorney General Merrick Garland and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to enforce the imposition of the many sanctions against Russia and its oligarchs.
“It will not be the last [seizure],” Attorney General Garland stated. “Together, with our international partners, we will do everything possible to hold accountable any individual whose criminal acts enable the Russian government to continue its unjust war.”
