Touched by an Angel

Let all God’s angels worship him.  – Hebrews 1:6

At the beginning of this century, angels were everywhere. Not God’s angels per se, but porcelain angels, angels on book jackets, angels as a charm around your neck, angels on greeting cards, and the Touched By An Angel television series. The nation was enamored with angels. The television series’ executive producer was Marianne Williamson, who ran as a candidate for president in 2020, and the writer of a New Age course on miracles. Few, if any, of the show’s depictions of the angels were accurate from a biblical perspective.

Throughout the book of Hebrews, you find that Jesus is greater than the prophets, the priests of Israel, the creation, and, yes, angels. In his commentary on Hebrews, John MacArthur wrote, “Most Jews believed that angels were very important to the Old Covenant. They esteemed these highest of the heavenly beings to be next to God. They believed that God was surrounded by angels and the angels were the instruments of bringing His Word to men and of working out His will in the universe.”

The writer of Hebrews affirms that Jesus is also greater than the angels. There is none who surpasses Him, save the Father alone. While an angel might protect you from dashing your foot on a stone (Matthew 4:6), no angel can redeem you. Angels are not to be venerated, since they are also created beings. Jesus is the One worthy of worship. He is superior to angels and they worship Him. You may have been “touched by an angel” at some point in your life, but you can only be saved by the Lord.

Pray for the citizens of this nation who are easily distracted by the “pretty things,” the “miracles,” their “encounters with angels,” that they come to see that it is Jesus alone who is worthy of their praise.

Today’s Verse:  Hebrews 1:6

And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says,
“Let all God’s angels worship him.”

3 knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. 4 They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.” 5 For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, 6 and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. 7 But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.

11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness,
