Issue 527 – Verse of the Week

January 27th – February 2nd, 2022

So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.  Matthew 7:12

Take the Initiative

Even people who have no regard for the Bible or the things of Jesus can tell you what the Golden Rule is: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, they will say. It is actually the basis of a principle found in most religions and cultures. Some three hundred years before Jesus said it, the Greek philosopher Isocrates said, “Do not do to others that which angers you when they do it to you.” But rather than putting it in the negative as Isocrates did, Jesus told His followers to take the initiative. Do for the other first. Set the example. Show the love, courtesy, courage, gratitude – whatever it is that you are wishing for – be the first to extend it. Sow what you want to reap. Give away that which you wish to receive. As Isaiah 1:7 says, “learn to do good… You can do it as the Holy Spirit fills you with everything that you need. Start today!
