Sweet Notes – Grateful Song

Who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy.  – Psalm 103:4

Commentator John Phillips calls Psalm 103 “The Song of the Soul Set Free.” In it, a host of benedictions are uttered to God, whose grace and mercy have been poured out upon those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. With His coming there is a healing of the soul and release from the diseases of guilt, fear, doubt, depression, anger, lust, hate, jealousy, and greed is available.

Pride and self create a pit that makes it difficult to perceive God’s standard of holiness. It is from this pit of iniquity that Christ’s coming to Earth has rescued the believer. Jesus was born to die so that you might live. How can you not take up the song of Psalm 103 and sing praises to the Father who sent His Son to take on the sins of all, pay the penalty, and provide a way to receive a life of eternal joy? Charles Spurgeon exclaimed that “no disease of our soul baffles His skill…redemption will ever constitute one of the sweetest notes in the believer’s grateful song.”

Additionally, as Spurgeon put it, the Lord gives you a crown “more precious than if it were made of corruptible things, such as silver and gold; it is studded with gems of grace and lined with the velvet of lovingkindness; it is decked with the jewels of mercy, but made soft for the head to wear by a lining of tenderness.” Be bold – this news is too good not to share. Tell those around you of the true reason for the season. Then lift your voice in song!

1 Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
    bless his holy name!
2 Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits,
3 who forgives all your iniquity,
    who heals all your diseases,
4 who redeems your life from the pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
5 who satisfies you with good
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

10 He does not deal with us according to our sins,
nor repay us according to our iniquities.
11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
    so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
12 as far as the east is from the west,
so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
13 As a father shows compassion to his children,
so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.

22 Bless the Lord, all his works,
in all places of his dominion.
Bless the Lord, O my soul!
