DOE Taps Petroleum Reserve after Hurricane Ida

Baton Rouge refinery essential to U.S. oil infrastructure.

On Friday, the Department of Energy authorized a second exchange of crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to the ExxonMobil refinery in Baton Rouge. This second release of 1,500,000 barrels of oil is a calculated preventative measure to help keep the petroleum infrastructure of the United States running, even with the destruction brought by Hurricane Ida.

“It’s important to know that the region hit by (Ida) is a key center of our nation’s oil production and refining infrastructure,” President Biden said. Electricity and transportation around and into the Baton Rouge oil refinery have already been impacted by the damage caused by Ida. “That’s why we’re not waiting to assess the full impact of the storm,” the president said.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the president’s administration as they assist Louisiana in recovery from the hurricane.
  • For the Department of Energy as they manage the U.S.’ remaining oil reserves.
