U.S. Warns Taliban with Diplomatic Repercussions

The warning comes as insurgents seize cities by force.

U.S. envoy Zalmay Khalilzad traveled to Doha, Qatar on Tuesday to visit with Taliban leaders and pass along a warning from the State Department. The statement warns that any government that takes over Afganistan through force and not through democratic processes would be shunned from the international community, and be shut out of diplomatic channels.

The Taliban has recently taken over many major cities in Afganistan through military offensives. U.S. Secretary of State Blinken has also publicly warned that Afghanistan would become a “pariah state” if it “commits atrocities against its own people.” The State Department is working to broker peace talks between the Taliban and the government of Afganistan.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • That officials of the State Department would have wisdom to promote a smooth transition in Afganistan
  • For Secretary Blinken to have discernment as he heads diplomatic efforts.
  • For the people of Afghanistan as they face the Taliban offensives.
