Issue 498 – Verse of the Week

July 8th – July 14th, 2021

VERSE OF THE WEEK

He has told you, O man, what is good, and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8

It’s Required

Freedom! It was happily celebrated early this week as America recalled this blessing God has given to them. It is that very Declaration of Independence that acknowledges that you have been endowed with certain freedoms, not by government, but by your Creator God. The freedoms that come from God are given because He loves you and wants you to live free. So then, what about today’s verse from Micah? Does it restrict those freedoms? One biblical scholar has said, “What God requires of human beings is nothing other than what He has done for them.” Doing justice, loving kindness, both acknowledge the kind of relationship God wants His people to have with one another. And being humble before the Lord acknowledges that you are a creature and not the Creator, that you are finite and not infinite in this life, that you are human and not God. Recognize your limitations today, and ask the Lord to empower you to do what is required… for in them you find true freedom.
