Interior Department Halts Arctic Drilling

Oil and gas leases from previous administration no longer In effect.

On Tuesday, the Department of the Interior announced that it would be ending all drilling operations in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The actions effectively end the Coastal Plain Oil and Gas Leasing Program that was put in place by the previous administration at the end of former President Trump’s term.

According to a statement from the Interior Department, “The Department is notifying lessees that it is suspending oil and gas leases in the Arctic Refuge, pending the review, to determine whether the leases should be reaffirmed, voided, or subject to additional mitigation measures.” No companies had started drilling in the refuge, and the future of resource gathering in the region is uncertain pending the department’s future review.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the president and his advisors as they implement power and energy strategies.
  • That the officials of the Interior Department would have wisdom on how to weigh the country’s resource needs and nature preservation.
  • For discernment for Secretary Haaland as she leads the department.
