U.S. Space Force Developing Reserve Component

Space Force National Guard also being considered.

General Daniel Hokanson, head of the National Guard, met with acting Air Force Secretary John Roth and Space Force Chief of Space Operations General Jay Raymond earlier in May to develop plans for a U.S. Space Force reserve component as well as a Space Force National Guard.

General Hokanson testified before the House Appropriations subcommittee regarding the National Guard budget, saying, “Among my most pressing concerns … [is] the establishment of a Space National Guard.”

Referencing the roughly 2,000 guard personnel already involved in space-focused operations, General Hokanson said, “The National Guard is also a trusted space and cyber partner. For 25 years, National Guard space units have provided operational, unit-equipped, surge-to-war capability to protect our nation’s vital interests in this contested domain.”

Plans for Space Force reservists and National Guard will be submitted to the Secretary of Defense for approval.
