Endless Frontier Act Moves Forward in Senate

Bipartisan bill addresses technology issues with China.

The Endless Frontier Act introduced by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York and Senator Todd Young of Indiana is aimed at boosting American technology research and development in an attempt to counter China’s economic and political ambitions.

The Senate voted 86-11 to move forward with the act which is expected to include measures that would increase tech research in areas such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, boost semiconductor manufacturing, and confront China’s theft of U.S. intellectual property.

The bill carries $100 billion in funding to expand the National Science Foundation and give it a new focus on technology. It would also set aside another $100 billion for the Commerce Department to help create regional tech funds for research and development.

Senator Schumer called the legislation a “once-in-a-generation investment in American science and American technology.” The bill could pass the Senate before June, although there are still some obstacles to overcome.
