The Importance of Community

Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the day drawing near. – Hebrews 10:25

If there is one thing everyone learned from 2020, it is how important it is to have a community. Humans were simply not made to live life alone. The author of Hebrews was well aware of this, which is why, in chapter 10, he encourages the believers to continue to meet together.

Discouragement is a great separator. It has the ability to make people avoid community, especially when they need it most. The opposite of this, according to the author of Hebrews, is encouragement, which takes place in community. There is something profound that happens when people gather intentionally. You are able to show loving care, while also receiving it from others. This sort of give-and-take, back-and-forth encouragement only happens when people are connected.

Now, more than ever, after feeling the effects of isolation, Christians should recognize the importance of meeting together. God did not design life to be done alone. And although gatherings may still look a little different as the pandemic wanes, there are ways that believers can continue to meet and encourage each other.

As you pray today, ask God to reveal to you different ways that you can reach out and encourage those in your life. Pray that, as the world opens back up, God’s people would be eager to gather together again. As you think about the nation, pray for its leaders. Ask God to surround them with a community that is ready to encourage them in a position that can often feel isolated.

Today’s Verse: Hebrews 10:25

12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
