NIH Studies Allergic Reactions to Vaccines

The National Institutes of Health has begun a clinical trial to determine allergic reactions to the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines. The trial seeks to discover whether systemic reactions are an increased risk to those who have a mast cell disorder or are highly allergic. The findings will be compared to reactions of participants who have no allergic history.

This study, called the Systemic Allergic Reactions to SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination, is funded and sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). “The public understandably has been concerned about reports of rare, severe allergic reactions to the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines,” said NIAID Director Anthony Fauci. “The information gathered during this trial will help doctors advise people who are highly allergic or have a mast cell disorder about the risks and benefits of receiving these two vaccines.” Dr. Fauci stated the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the risks for the majority of the population.
