Russia Building Military Presence in the Arctic

U.S. officials voice concerns over increased weapons testing.

U.S. military and civilian officials have voiced concerns about the build-up of the Russian military on the Arctic coast of their country. Satellite imagery shows an increase in military presence and weapons testing occurring in an area that was formerly iced over.

“Russia is refurbishing Soviet-era airfields and radar installations, constructing new ports and search-and-rescue centers, and building up its fleet of nuclear- and conventionally-powered icebreakers,” said Pentagon spokesman Lt. Colonel Thomas Campbell.

One of the weapons being tested is the Russian Poseidon 2M39 unmanned stealth torpedo that runs along the seafloor powered by a nuclear reactor. The weapon is capable of delivering a radioactive warhead to the coast of another nation.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for Pentagon officials as they evaluate options to defend the United States.
  • For Secretary Austin as he leads the Department of Defense.
