A New Song

He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. – Psalm 40:3

Do you ever feel as though you are stuck in a situation that you can’t get out of? It can be very discouraging to feel like all of your efforts to escape are being made in vain. Who can you turn to when that happens?

David understood how it felt to be stuck in a “pit” of miry clay, and described how God brought him out in Psalm 40. Despite his best efforts, David couldn’t find his way out on his own. Instead, he waited patiently and trusted that God would deliver him. David then spends the rest of Psalm 40 praising God with the “new song” he was given after being delivered.

David’s song is a reminder of who God is. God is the Deliverer! There is no pit too deep nor situation too complicated for God to enter into with you. In the midst of waiting, you can know that God is with you and will resolve the situation in His perfect timing. And you can look forward to the new song you will sing, just as David did.

Whether you are still waiting for God in the pit, or if you are already singing your new song of praise on the mountain top, there is reason to praise Him today. God is still good and He’s still working all things together for good. Ask Him for faith like David’s today, that you may trust Him to deliver you from whatever circumstances you are in and that He would give you a new song to sing. Pray as well for believers in Washington, D.C., to seek the Lord’s deliverance in any difficult situations they face.

Today’s Verse: Psalm 40:3

He put a new song in my mouth,
    a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
    and put their trust in the Lord.

Oh sing to the Lord a new song,
    for he has done marvelous things!
His right hand and his holy arm
    have worked salvation for him.
The Lord has made known his salvation;
    he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations.
He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness
    to the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen
    the salvation of our God.

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth;
    break forth into joyous song and sing praises!
Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre,
    with the lyre and the sound of melody!
With trumpets and the sound of the horn
    make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord!

Let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
    the world and those who dwell in it!
Let the rivers clap their hands;
    let the hills sing for joy together
before the Lord, for he comes
    to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with righteousness,
    and the peoples with equity.
