Effervescent Praise

Addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart. – Ephesians 5:19

Have you ever watched someone drop a breath mint into a bottle of diet soda? The mint causes a reaction that makes the soda bubble and shoot out of the bottle like a rocket. There is simply no other place for the soda to go, so it overflows everywhere. While it is a fun experiment to do with kids or at a party, have you ever seen this as a picture of what worship should be for Christians?

In Ephesians 5, Paul calls the members of the church to be filled with the Holy Spirit, “addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with [their] heart” (Ephesians 5:19). A life full of the Spirit cannot help but overflow with praises to God, leading others to praise Him, as well.

It is important to note that Paul makes no disclaimer for when Christians should praise God. He does not say that they should do it only when they feel like it or only when life is going well. His formula is simple: if you are filled with the Spirit, your heart will overflow with praises to God, just like the mint in the soda.

When was the last time you felt full of the Spirit? How often do you encourage those around you to praise God just for who He is? Pray that God would fill you with His Spirit again, so you would effervesce with praise, and that He would also fill the hearts of the nation’s leaders, that they would lead the U.S. to praise God.

I will extol you, my God and King,
and bless your name forever and ever.
Every day I will bless you
and praise your name forever and ever.
Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,
    and his greatness is unsearchable.
One generation shall commend your works to another,
and shall declare your mighty acts.
On the glorious splendor of your majesty,
and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds,
and I will declare your greatness.
They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness
and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.
The Lord is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
The Lord is good to all,
and his mercy is over all that he has made.
