Majesty

Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases. – Psalm 115:3

Tour almost any museum that features past rulers of Europe or Asia and you will see displays of thrones.  The collections can range from simple wooden chairs to jewel-encrusted splendors from which kings, queens, emperors, empresses, popes, or other rulers have exercised their magisterial control over the people under them.

God has a throne. In Isaiah 66:1, the Lord says, “Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool.”  In Isaiah 6, God is seen by the prophet sitting upon a throne with His glory on full display. In Luke’s gospel, the angel Gabriel says of Jesus that He will be called the Son of the Highest, and the Lord God will give Him the throne of his father David (Luke 1:32). Jesus promised thrones to His disciples (Matthew 19:28). And seeing God’s throne is a promise for all who have made Jesus their Savior (Revelation 20:11).

Today’s verse says that from His place in Heaven, God does what He pleases. And what pleases Him is to deal abundantly with you. “The Lord waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you” (Isaiah 30:18). Worship the Lord in all His majesty today. Sing praises to Him. Give Him thanks. Celebrate His glory. Pray that those in the coming administration will desire to serve the Lord.

Today’s Verse: Psalm 115:3

Our God is in the heavens;
    he does all that he pleases.

Oh come, let us sing to the Lord;
    let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
    let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
For the Lord is a great God,
    and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth;
    the heights of the mountains are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it,
    and his hands formed the dry land.
Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
    let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
For he is our God,
    and we are the people of his pasture,
    and the sheep of his hand.
