Light Has Come

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. – Isaiah 9:2

A few days ago, the world witnessed something that hadn’t happened for 800 years… the conjunction of the planets Jupiter and Saturn. Though greatly apart, they appeared to be conjoined into one shining star. They were not a star, of course, but together the planets’ reflection of the sun was unusually bright. “A rare Christmas Star,” the media proclaimed.

But greater than a rare Christmas star is here… Jesus, the Light of the World, whose first advent is celebrated today. He lights the way for those living in darkness. He turns gloominess into gladness and takes you from deep darkness into the glories of His radiant light. “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you” (Isaiah 60:1).

Today’s verse says the people “walked in darkness.” They were dwelling in a dark and perilous time. The same thing is happening to people today. They sit in darkness because they rebel against the words of God and spurn the counsel of the Most High (Psalm 107:10-11).  They do not need to see a rare conjunction of two planets, they need Jesus. If you have been transferred from the kingdom of darkness into His Kingdom of Light, reflect that Light today to others. Jesus said, “I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness” (John 12:46). Pray for each of the nation’s leaders to desire a way out of darkness and come to the True Light.

Today’s Verse: Isaiah 9:2

The people who walked in darkness
    have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
    on them has light shone.

Arise, shine, for your light has come,
    and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
For behold, darkness shall cover the earth,
    and thick darkness the peoples;
but the Lord will arise upon you,
    and his glory will be seen upon you.
And nations shall come to your light,
    and kings to the brightness of your rising.
Lift up your eyes all around, and see;
    they all gather together, they come to you;
your sons shall come from afar,
    and your daughters shall be carried on the hip.
Then you shall see and be radiant;
    your heart shall thrill and exult,
because the abundance of the sea shall be turned to you,
    the wealth of the nations shall come to you.
A multitude of camels shall cover you,
    the young camels of Midian and Ephah;
    all those from Sheba shall come.
They shall bring gold and frankincense,
    and shall bring good news, the praises of the Lord.

19 The sun shall be no more
    your light by day,
nor for brightness shall the moon
    give you light;
but the Lord will be your everlasting light,
    and your God will be your glory.
