Activism

Keep in step with God’s Word

Psalm 97:10 – O you who love the Lord, hate evil!

Are you called to be an activist?  Maybe you attend pro-life marches, or perhaps you advocate for foster children. Maybe you’ve involved yourself on one side of the other over support for law enforcement. Or you could be actively involved in the election challenges. Whatever you do, if you do these things, be sure you have covered yourself first with a clear understanding of God’s will for you and what His Word has to say.

Proverbs 6:16-19 says, “There are six things that the Lord hates; seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.” Proverbs 8:13 says, “The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate.”

God does require certain things from you: that you do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with Him (Micah 6:8);  You must not mistreat any widow or fatherless child (Exodus 22:22); you should bear evidence of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23); and above all love Him and your neighbor.  Then you will actively rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in all circumstances.  These are the will of God in Christ Jesus for you (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

Pray With Us

Heavenly Father, slow me down! So much has happened this year that has my emotions on edge, and I feel like I want to “do” something. My tendency is to latch on to an activity that may be worthwhile, but that has no advantage to advancing Your Kingdom here on the Earth.  Take the anxiety about the future from my mind, and let me rest at Your feet, drawn more into Your Word and into prayer. You know what is best for me and what Your plans are for this nation and our leaders. You have told me to submit to that authority, and at the same time be ready for whatever good work You assign to me. Take my urges toward activism, and make them stronger in following You. I pray it in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

  • Confess if the worries of this world have taken you off the path God has designed for you.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to nudge you when you are taking your focus off the things that God desires from His people.
  • Take the time to double-check your political or social activism against what the Bible says.
  • Ask God to make you more sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
  • Practice random acts of kindness; do one today.
