And Yet…

And all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. – 1 Corinthians 10:4

They were a blessed people, a chosen people, and yet they were afraid. After living in captivity for 400 years in Egypt, the Lord heard the cry of the Israelites as they suffered under their oppressors. Though God sent Moses to lead them out of slavery into the Promised Land (Exodus 3:7-10), they struggled to trust Him.

And yet, the Lord protected and led them by day in a cloud, and by night with a pillar of fire (Exodus 13:21-22). God fed them manna, His heavenly food, and brought water forth from the rock for them in the midst of a dry and thirsty land… and yet, they complained and disobeyed (Exodus 16-17).

It could be easy to judge the chosen people of God as ungrateful… and yet, looking around today’s America, there are many who are not grateful for the blessings God has bestowed. The Apostle Paul’s message to the Corinthians is relevant for this nation today – God has provided the Rock of Salvation, Christ the crucified, to sustain and redeem.

Remain humble before the Lord, recalling Paul’s warning, “let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall” (1 Corinthians 10:12). 2020 has been quite the year! Stay firm in your faith. When you are given the opportunity, spread the joy of peace that only Jesus can offer. He came as a babe, but His purpose was sure… to save a lost world, including a nation that has lost its way. Pray for God’s guidance in the coming year.

Today’s Verse: 1 Corinthians 10:4

and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.

Oh come, let us sing to the Lord;
    let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
    let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
For the Lord is a great God,
    and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth;
    the heights of the mountains are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it,
    and his hands formed the dry land.

Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
    let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
For he is our God,
    and we are the people of his pasture,
    and the sheep of his hand.
Today, if you hear his voice,
    do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah,
    as on the day at Massah in the wilderness,
when your fathers put me to the test
    and put me to the proof, though they had seen my work.
