Marco Rubio, U.S. Senator from Florida

Marco Rubio

U.S. Senator from Florida

Marco Antonio Rubio was born in May 1971 in Miami, Florida. His parents were Cubans who immigrated to the U.S. prior to the rise of Fidel Castro. He earned an undergraduate degree in political science from the University of Florida and received his Juris Doctor from the University of Miami School of Law. While studying law, he interned for a U.S. Representative.

Two years out of law school, he was elected to a seat as City Commissioner for West Miami where he served for two years before moving to the Florida House of Representatives where he was a member for eight years. For two of those years, he was Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives. After leaving the Florida legislature, he started his own law firm and was an adjunct professor at Florida International University. He has been a member of the United States Senate since January 2011.

He was a candidate in the primary 2016 presidential campaign.

Rubio is married to Jeanette Dusdebes, and they have four children. He is a Roman Catholic, and has also attended a Southern Baptist church.

In the News…

According to Senator Marco Rubio, Twitter has made “an international decision” to condone the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s disinformation. Many in America are frustrated with how U.S. social media companies manage their platforms.

“The American people increasingly see mainstream social media, especially Twitter as little more than a liberal echo chamber inclined to censor conservatives,” Rubio wrote. “I share their concern, especially when enemies of America are allowed to post falsified and dangerously misleading images with no consequences.”

“Social media platforms, including Twitter, have taken it upon themselves to regulate, moderate, and censor speech on their platforms,” he added. “That is your right as a private company. However, the logic of such actions is increasingly difficult to understand in light of their inconsistency and raises questions of whether Twitter specifically should be eligible for Section 230 protections.”

In recent years, Senator Rubio has also rebuked other U.S. technology companies, such as Google, for cooperating with China’s authoritarianism.
