Making Decisions

Find your direction in prayer and scripture.

Psalm 32:8 – I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.

How do you decide something? Do you flip a coin? How about consulting a fortune cookie? For any major life choices, these options likely sound ridiculous. Turning to God through prayer and the study of scripture is crucial for believers in times of uncertainty. Yet, for many of the decisions that you face in life, you will find no specific directive in the Word of God. Instead, you will find principles for your decision making. The Bible is God’s foundation for living. Alongside scripture, you can go to God prayer. Talking to Him and listening to His Word are musts for every Christian making tough life decisions. Your willingness to submit your intentions to His perfect will is key.

It likely does not matter to God if you purchase the red Ford or the white Toyota. But what does matter is that you act responsibly with your finances, that you use your vehicle for righteous purposes, and that you honor your relationship with Him by having it. In those times when you might have to choose between two excellent options, remember what God has said in Psalm 37, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust in Him, and he will act.” The closer you draw to the Lord, the more confident you can be that He will lead you into the right pat you need to take to make any decision.

Pray With Us

Dear Heavenly Father, You know my tendency to go off on my own way much too often. I let myself become so involved in doing things that I neglect time spent with You. Then a big decision comes my way, and I flounder. There are decisions ahead of me today. I know what my old self would want to do; but by Your love, I have been transformed into a new creature and know to submit to Your will for me. Continue to be my guide, O Holy Spirit. I am yours, Amen.

  • Pray about any and all major decisions you could be facing today.
  • Pray to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading.
  • Ask the Lord to direct you to a place or principle in His Word that will help your decision making.
  • Pray that God would give you clarity on things that may appear confusing where you lack understanding.
  • Ask God to give you strength to apply His perfect word without compromise.
  • Pray for patience as you wait on God and on His timing.
