Alex Michael Azar II was born in June 1967 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He received a B.A. with highest honors in government and economics from Dartmouth College and earned a Juris Doctor at the Yale Law School. After law school, he served as a law clerk at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and was a law clerk for Associate Justice Antonin Scalia at the Supreme Court.

Azar served two years as an associate independent counsel for Kenneth Star during the Whitewater controversy. He later engaged in the private practice of law.

In 2001, Azar was confirmed to be the General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, resigning in 2007. He was hired by Eli Lilly and Company to be the company’s top lobbyist and spokesman, later becoming the company’s Vice President of U.S. Managed Healthcare Services. Within a few years, Azar became President of Lilly USA, from which he resigned in 2017.

In November 2017, President Trump nominated Azar to be the Secretary of Health and Human Services. He was confirmed by the Senate and assumed his position in January 2018.

Azar is married and has two children. He is an active member of the Lebanese-American community in Pennsylvania.

Pfizer, Inc. reported that the coronavirus vaccine they have been developing is more than 90 percent effective in its first analysis. An interim analysis by an independent data monitoring committee affirmed that it was more than 90 percent effective at protecting people compared with a placebo saline shot.

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar told reporters, “Pfizer will have to now pull together their data and submit it to the FDA where it will undergo an independent review process there.” He added that it could take several weeks for the submission to be reviewed by the Food and Drug Administration.
