Final Authority

There is no authority except from God

Romans 13:1 – Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.

A.W. Tozer was an American pastor, author, and spiritual mentor whose works have greatly influenced many Christian leaders. He understood the depths of the grace of God and often taught that Christians should seek a deeper life with the Father. He said, “While it looks like things are out of control, behind the scenes there is a God who has not surrendered His authority.”

God is the ultimate authority, simply because He is “the Lord, and there is no other” (Isaiah 45:18). He is the One who created everything, including human beings. He is Father overall, and as such, has authority over you. Job chapters 38 to 41 gives you a brief glance into the wonders of all that God has done. “Who then is he who can stand before me?” the Lord asks in Job 41:10.

Because God is your ultimate authority in every area, you need to make sure you know what His Word says, making it authoritative in every area of your life. Recognize when beliefs and philosophies of others are contrary to His Word, and “destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.” There is no higher authority.

Pray With Us

Our Father in Heaven, in Job chapters 38 to 41, You give a brief glance into all the wonders You have done. Then you ask, “Who is he who can stand before me?” We acknowledge You as our Sovereign. All authority in Heaven and on Earth is with You and Your Son, Jesus. None of us can stand before that, so we humbly kneel in submission to You and to Your will for us as individuals and as a nation. Guide and direct those to whom you give administration and leadership positions over us. Give them supernatural wisdom from You. Teach them Your ways, so they may walk in them. Amen.

  • Pray with thanksgiving, acknowledging that God, by His own authority, is in control.
  • Pray that you would be challenged into a deeper life with the Father.
  • Seek His Holy Spirit’s guidance in helping you discern what is true when all about you are lies and deceptions.
  • Pray that, by God’s grace, things being done in the dark inside government would be exposed to His light and His judgment.
  • Pray for unity among Christians who have held widely different views during this election season as they acknowledge that it is God who has the final say.
