Not the Minutiae

It is well with the man who deals generously and lends; who conducts his affairs with justice.  – Psalm 112:5

Sometimes it pays to look at the bigger picture – stand back and review a situation at the 10,000-foot level rather than looking at it head-on. In that light, take a moment and read all of Psalm 112 (yes, you really can do it in this moment – see below, the link will take you there; then come back here).

This is a psalm that focuses on the moral character of the faithful and tells of the benefits that person brings to himself and others because of it. Here is one who fears – stands in awe of –God; he actually delights in the Lord’s commandments. Why does he feel that way? Because he understands that God’s desires are for his good. He is gracious, merciful, and righteous because he lives as one who loves what God loves and hates what God hates. Because the Lord blesses him, he will in turn deal generously and justly with others. He trusts in the One who brings firmness and steadiness to his walk. No matter the circumstance, he will not be afraid.

There are many people today who are caught up with the minutiae of the moment; they must respond to every Facebook post, emotions sore at the words of politicians with whom they disagree, and sadness overwhelms when rioters destroy lives and people’s life’s work.

It is the duty of the righteous man, the faithful man, the God-fearing man (and woman) to hold to what is right and not be silent. May God’s glory be seen in His people, both where you live and in the halls of government. Pray that it be so. Read the Psalm again and give God the glory.

Today’s Verse: Psalm 112:5

It is well with the man who deals generously and lends;
    who conducts his affairs with justice.

Praise the Lord!
Blessed is the man who fears the Lord,
    who greatly delights in his commandments!
His offspring will be mighty in the land;
    the generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches are in his house,
    and his righteousness endures forever.
Light dawns in the darkness for the upright;
    he is gracious, merciful, and righteous.
It is well with the man who deals generously and lends;
    who conducts his affairs with justice.
For the righteous will never be moved;
    he will be remembered forever.
He is not afraid of bad news;
    his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord.
His heart is steady; he will not be afraid,
    until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.
He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor;
    his righteousness endures forever;
    his horn is exalted in honor.
10 The wicked man sees it and is angry;
    he gnashes his teeth and melts away;
    the desire of the wicked will perish!
